Fauna

Dolné Záhorie territory is the area of diverse fauna. The invertebrates are represented by valuable species of spiders, butterflies, dragon-flies and beetles. Water is home to 51 species of fishes, majority of them belong to the carp family (Cyprinidae) and the family of percidae (Percidae). Out of total 18 species of amphibians found in the territory of Slovakia, 13 species live in Záhorie region. Notable birds are the ones bound to water environment such as the White Stork (Ciconia ciconi), the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), an egret (Egretta), the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), grebes (Podiceps), swans (Cygnus), geese and ducks. Bird predators nest here as well: the Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), the Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), the Eurasian Eagle – owl (Bubo bubo), the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the Red Kite (Milvus milvus), the Black Kite (Milvus migrans) and the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus). In the Záhorie region 25 species of bats have been recorded. The biggest mammals are represented by the wild boar (Sus scrofa), a deer and a stag, (Cervidae), a musmon (Ovis aries) and the Fallow Deer (Dama dama). Lately a new typical character of the floodplain forest has been kept by a beaver returning to this region.
