Závod

Závod

Závod lies in the middle of the Záhorská plain 15km on the north from Malacky. The village was probably established in the 14th century. In the 16th century Croatian colonists settled down here. From this period a name Zabod was kept from which the current name was derived. In the past people dealt with wood-carving, embroidering, basket-making, weaving and wooden coal manufacture. The most impressive sight in the village as well as in the whole region of Záhorie is the gothic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary from 1339, restored into a renaissance style in 1777. There is another church in the village, the St Michael the Archangel Church from 1897 in neogothic style. From the railway station a hiking path marked with red starts, it continues across flat area of the Borská plain forests, through the villages Závod, Studienka, Lakšárska Nová Ves, leading to Senica. The Záhorská Cycle Route passes through Závod as well. On the southwest from the village there is the conservation area Abrod with occurrence of valuable wetland vegetation and protected animals. The village is connected by railway with Malacky and Bratislava and in the opposite direction with Kúty. At close quarters there is the D2 highway, but there is no adjunction to Závod.
